The other day in class, we did a trapping exercise in Adobe Illustrator to sort of show the process with color and print and what overprint looks like. We discussed the difference between black and rich black and how two colors overlapping one another can create a new color when printed. Regular black is when you set your Black tint to completely 100%, and no other tints. Rich black is achieved when you set all of the CMYK tints to completely 100%, this will result in a more deep and even shade of black. We did this with two seperate letter A’s and set them each on a 100% Cyan-filled box to visualize the difference. With the option “overprint fill” checked, we saw that the black A turned a new color once overlapping the Cyan, and the Rich Black A did not. There are a few other exercises we did, and you can take a quick look here!
